Audit of USAID/Afghanistan’s Afghanistan Stabilization Initiative—Southern Region.
Fiscal Year: 2011
In June 2009, USAID signed a 3-year, $160 million contract with Chemonics International Inc. to support the implementation of the Afghanistan Stability Initiative. This initiative funds small-scale projects that will serve as platforms for longer-term activities and improve the Afghan Government’s ability to carry out programs in nonpermissive areas within a counterinsurgency context.
The contractor is expected to coordinate implementation of activities with the International Security Assistance Force, the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police Force, and Afghan Government representatives. As much as possible, activities are expected to be operated and implemented by the Afghan Government. Project activities will provide new furniture and equipment to local schools, dig water wells and provide potable water, and rehabilitate roads.
This audit will determine whether USAID/Afghanistan’s Stabilization Initiative—Southern Region is building confidence between communities and the Afghan Government.
